Virginia Lab Performs Amazing Feats of Diagnosis

Sebia Electrophoresis helps two-man lab handle a heavy load of testing

It’s hard to believe what is going on in the toxicology department at Virginia Hospital Center

For one thing, Toxicology is handling electrophoresis in addition to the full range of toxicology services for the 334-bed tertiary care facility.

Secondly, the department is doing all of this with only two people.

It might sound like a fish story – but it’s very much the truth. After all, nobody said all of the work had to be done by human hands.

Arun Sharma, MT (ASCP), and Shahid Malik, MT (ASCP), are the two toxicology technologists who for years have expertly handled a full caseload of testing associated with drug screenings, poisonings, suicides, crime investigations and more. In 2004, the “dynamic duo” volunteered to take over electrophoresis when the hospital’s chemistry department became overloaded with testing volume.
