This companion handbook provides a comprehensive understanding of hemoglobinopathies and thalassemias with recommendations for the physician. Laboratory diagnostics of these diseases is the central focus of this handbook; such topics are included concerning lab diagnostics: reflex testing, ethnicity data, analytical tools, CE result interpretation, reporting results, initiating prevention, and when to apply molecular technologies, among other topics. Lastly, genetic counseling is addressed in terms of the possible prevention of severe hemoglobinopathies and thalassemias, and the cultural elements involved in counseling. “A better understanding of the diagnostic results and a better communication between MDs, labs, and counselors is needed for better prevention strategy, using the existing elements of public healthcare.”
